A record 11,200 Americans will turn 65 in 2024. According to the Pew Research Center roughly one-in-five workers say they are very or somewhat likely to look for a new job in the next six months. Whether you’re changing jobs, transitioning out of a lifelong career, or moving from one place to the next, it’s clear that Americans are in transition.
Many of these people are unprepared for what comes next after a lifetime of building a career or raising a family. Our culture too has forgotten rites of passages and rituals that support people successfully navigate big, life transitions. Too often, the second half of life is viewed as a time of decline or loss. However, it can be a new frontier, a time of courageous action, a time to map out a new landscape and direction, to reimagine what life can and might be, and then create it.
In organizing and leading Walk in Beauty Pilgrimages for more than ten years, I’ve accompanied hundreds of people navigate life transitions. Pilgrimage is an opportunity to meet yourself in a new and different way, to reflect on the inner life and on what is most meaningful to you. Some people realize through the act of pilgrimage that it’s time for a course correction, or to engage acceptance and loss, or to repair broken relationships.
