King’s Wisdom of Transformation

January 19, 2026

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King  Jr.’s Urgent Wisdom of Transformation
In a 1967 speech, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. named a truth that remains as urgent now as it was then. He said there are some things in our society to which we should never be adjusted. There are social conditions to which we must remain maladjusted as a people of social witness. He spoke of racial discrimination and segregation of that time, among other social ills. Today we face these challenges and more, including climate crisis, war, genocide, polarization and dehumanization.
In the face-of the ‘poly-crisis’, we can become complacent or overwhelmed, believing societal breakdown is the norm, inevitable. King and others have said it is no measure of individual or societal health to be well adjusted to a world shaped by climate catastrophe, the erosion of democratic values and norms, widespread hunger, or the absence of basic healthcare.
King calls for a refusal to adjust to social injustice.  We must channel energy into collective action that upholds dignity and cares for both the human and more-than-human world. Today, we are called forward to loving confrontation, recognizing injustice, naming it clearly, and acting from compassion rather than contempt.
At the heart of this refusal is King’s call for us to become transformed nonconformists when the prevailing tendency is to conform to injustice. Transformation interrupts inaction and this begins within, our beliefs, values, and sense of meaning.
In a time of violence, love becomes an act of transformed nonconformity.
In a time of fear, faith becomes an act of transformed nonconformity.
In a time of misinformation, education becomes an act of transformed nonconformity.
In a time of corrupt leadership, community becomes an act of transformed nonconformity.
And in a time like this, joy becomes an act of transformed nonconformity.
