I wrote Hope Leans Forward in 2022 while experiencing prolong grief.
There were days when hope felt very distant and yet, I was compelled to write this book. Since writing the book, I’ve received countless encouraging messages from people all over the world. Many identified with searching for meaning in the loss, searching for hope in the midst of grief.
I recall the words of Jungian analyst, James Hollis, in his brilliant book, Living an Examined Life. He says, “Our soul can manage a great deal: suffering loss, isolation, and much more if it feels that there is a purpose to the suffering.”
The question that I grappled with in Hope Leans Forward was, can suffering hold purpose and meaning?
Over time, I have come to understand that hope is not something we wait for. Nor is it something we manufacture through sheer optimism or wishful thinking. Hope is a way of living. It is a quiet commitment to remain faithful to our deepest values, especially when the outcome is uncertain, to live aligned to a path of purpose and meaning even when grief feels like an emotional roller coaster ride with no way off.
The inner spiritual journey is not about withdrawing from the world. It is about becoming more fully present to it. It asks us to pay attention to the quality of our thoughts, the generosity of our words, and the intentions behind our actions, to live with meaning and purpose in the face of uncertain outcomes. It invites us to notice where fear has narrowed our vision and where love is asking us to widen it once again.
Again and again, I have witnessed that the most meaningful transformations begin within us and quietly ripple outward. The way we speak to a family member, friend, or stranger. The way we respond to someone with whom we disagree. The willingness to listen before defending our position. The courage to remain in relationship when it would be easier to retreat into judgment or certainty.
The world does not need more noise.
It needs more people willing to live with a generous heart.
More people willing to communicate with honesty and compassion.
More people willing to bridge divides rather than deepen them.
More people willing to recognize that our shared humanity is always greater than our differences.
This is the quiet work of transformation.
Not becoming someone else, but becoming more fully ourselves—more deeply rooted in love, more grounded in integrity, and more willing to live in alignment with what matters most.
- Hope leans forward every time we choose understanding over polarization.
- Hope leans forward every time we choose relationship over isolation.
- Hope leans forward every time we refuse to reduce another human being to a label, an ideology, or a single story.
- And perhaps hope leans forward every time we remember that the work of healing the world begins with the courage to tend our own hearts.
