Intendables’: Living from ‘One Day to ‘Today’

August 27, 2024

Recently a colleague who reads a lot said she has two piles of books: those she’s currently reading and ‘intendables’, books that someday she’ll get to. Her comment reminded me of the poignant song, entitled, Next Year by Donovan Woods, a straightforward, urgent message about the myriad ways we tend to put things off until it’s too late:

My little boy and me
We were out to eat
And he said: I can’t wait ’til next year
When I asked him why he said: ‘Cause we’re goin’ camping
We’re goin’ to the ballgame
And we’ll do all them other things you said we’d do next year
So when is it next year?

These lyrics got me thinking about the extraordinary leadership team of an international nonprofit organization that I am working with to create a vision of a more purposeful life.

One of the key elements of creating that vision is moving from habits to rituals.   Ritual goes well beyond creating new habits;   it envelopes habit with meaning and purpose. Priorities come into focus when they’re ritualized, moving from ‘one day’ to ‘today’.

We get clear, very clear about what matters and why.

Here’s a wonderful podcast that can support you in moving from habit to ritual:  https://behavioralgrooves.podb…
