In October 2002, I first walked the Pilgrimage of El Camino de Santiago, Spain with three Cuban friends. I arrived at this ancient, thousand year old route with a ‘get it done’ attitude, clueless about the spiritual nature of pilgrimage or even my own deeper motivations for being there. Instead, I was hyper-focused on externals: selecting the right backpack, the best wicking clothing, the right hiking shoes, thinking that’s what I needed. I was wrong (and right). One of the many things I learned from that experience now twenty years ago is that El Camino is not about externals: the right clothing or even the right logistics, it’s an inward journey of self-reflection, discovery, and awakening that cannot be done alone. We need support in this search toward meaning. From our beginning in 2015, Walk in Beauty Pilgrimages focus on one big aspiration: to offer a life-changing, safe, brave, and nurturing space to heal, challenge, and transform in an amenities packed experience, including feeling fully supported and connected to a caring community, savoring stunning natural landscapes, superb lodging, and regional delicious local cuisine while exploring what matters most. Over the coming weeks, you’ll hear the powerful voices and transformative stories of pilgrims who joined Walk in Beauty Portuguese Coast Camino and the Asturias Art & Adventure Camino, 2022. We begin this month with Marna Anderson, a leader of diverse international teams, who asked herself a powerful question. |
