Love as a Way of Living

July 15, 2026

We speak often of love, but perhaps not often enough of what love asks of us.

Love is not merely a feeling that arrives when circumstances are favorable or when relationships are easy. Love is a discipline of the heart. It is a daily practice of choosing openness over fear, curiosity over certainty, and compassion over indifference. It asks us to see beyond first impressions, beyond assumptions, beyond the many ways we divide ourselves from one another.

There is no shortage of voices encouraging us to draw lines between “us” and “them.” We are told who belongs and who does not. We are invited to reduce one another to labels, opinions, affiliations, or differences. In doing so, we slowly lose sight of something essential: our shared humanity.

My inner spiritual journey has taught me that the way we live with others is inseparable from the way we live with ourselves. If I cannot sit honestly with my own fears, wounds, and uncertainties, I will inevitably project them onto someone else. If I cannot extend compassion toward my own imperfections, it becomes far more difficult to offer grace to another human being.

This is why inner work matters.

Not because it makes us more accomplished or more enlightened, but because it has the potential to make us more loving.

The invitation to contemplative practice is not to withdraw from the world, but to enter it more fully. To become more attentive to our words. More aware of our assumptions. More willing to listen without immediately correcting, persuading, or defending. More willing to ask questions whose answers may transform us.

Christina Baldwin in Circle of Firelight speaks to this transformation:

“It has always been scary

to step into the circle of firelight,

to show up in the company of strangers,

to ask for entrance or to offer it….”

Again and again, I have witnessed that some of the deepest healing begins when another person feels genuinely seen and genuinely heard. Not fixed. Not analyzed. Not judged. Simply received with dignity and care.

There is profound wisdom in learning to accompany rather than advise, to listen rather than rescue, to remain present rather than rush toward certainty. In these quiet moments, trust begins to grow. Relationships deepen. Communities become stronger. Love becomes visible.

Love also asks something more of us.

It asks that we recognize the courage required to remain openhearted in a divided world. It asks us to communicate across differences without diminishing another person’s humanity. It asks us to examine our own habits of certainty, to become curious about the stories we carry, and to remember that every person we encounter is living a life as complex and precious as our own.

Transformation rarely happens through argument alone.

More often, it begins with attention.

With listening.

With humility.

With the willingness to let another person’s experience expand our own understanding of the world.

Over time, I have come to believe that vocation is not simply about what we do. It is about how we choose to be present in the world. It is reflected in the quality of our relationships, the integrity of our actions, the generosity of our spirit, and our willingness to contribute to the flourishing of others.

Perhaps this is what it means to lean toward love.

To choose relationship when isolation feels easier.

To choose understanding when judgment feels justified.

To choose hope when cynicism appears more practical.

And to remember, again and again, that the transformation we seek for ourselves is inseparable from the transformation we seek for our families, our communities, and our world.
