Love Without Losing Yourself: A Monthly Love Letter Reflection

March 15, 2026

There is something deeply affirming about being needed; to be the one others turn to; to be capable, responsive, and steady when life feels uncertain. Many of us have shaped our identities around being generous with our time, our energy, and our attention. We show up. We hold space. We solve problems. There is love in that.
And yet, there is also a quiet vulnerability in doing too much for too many.  I have found myself at this place many times and I am sure you have too.  This seems to be the measure of lives.
Recently, I received a request from an acquaintance requesting that I participate in a weekly WhatsApp check in for a group of colleagues.  As difficult as it was to say, ‘no’, I did just that.  I felt a refreshing honesty rise in me and offered a gentle decline while also affirming my appreciation of the person and the group, and the importance of balancing and stewarding my time and attention.

This month’s love letter invites a closer look at personal stewardship.
What if love does not require depletion? What if care is not proven through self-abandonment? What if balance is not selfish, but sacred?

This love letter to self makes room for these questions which point to a truth. It allows us to name where we are stretched thin. It gently reminds us that our worth is not dependent on how indispensable we appear.

Love, when directed inward, does not diminish our care for others. It refines it. It teaches us to give from choice rather than compulsion. It encourages us to discern what is truly ours to carry and what belongs to someone else’s journey.

Finding balance is not about withdrawing from responsibility. It is about aligning responsibility with capacity. It is about trusting that relationships can withstand our boundaries. It is about recognizing that sustainability is a form of love.

This month, I offered the retreat,  Reclaiming Rest:  Nourishing Practices for Body, Mind & Spirit.  What better way to model the essence of this retreat than through my own practice of self-stewardship and self-care, not as narcissism, but as self-appreciation.
As you sit with this reflection, you might ask yourself where love has quietly turned into over-functioning. You might notice where your energy is leaking and what would restore it. You might consider what it would mean to remain generous without disappearing from your own life.

THE MEASURE OF OUR HUMANITY:

Actualizing Compassionate Action in These Tangled Times – TRANSFORMATION with Valerie Brown
March 29, 2026 | By Donation Online Program
Transformation asks us to pause and look deeply at how we live, relate, and respond to the challenges of our time. In this online offering, I invite you to explore transformation not as an abstract idea, but as a lived and relational practice rooted in awareness, courage, and compassion.
Drawing on the teachings of Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh and the practice of engaged mindfulness, we will reflect on what it means to transform suffering into clarity, healing, and wise action. Together, we will consider how our moral worth is expressed through the ways we show up for one another and how values such as inclusion, belonging, dignity, justice, and courage can guide our everyday choices.
Through contemplation, reflection, and shared presence, we will reconnect with what truly matters and consider how inner transformation can support compassionate action in a world facing profound social and environmental challenges.
