There is something tender and often overlooked about receiving love.
Many of us know how to give. We know how to show up, how to care, how to anticipate needs, how to offer encouragement, support, and presence. Giving can feel natural, even noble. It can become part of how we understand ourselves in the world, maybe how we measure our sense of self-esteem and self-worth.
Receiving is often another matter.
To receive love, whether in the form of kindness, affirmation, help, patience, or steady presence, can stir something unexpectedly vulnerable. We may smile and deflect. We may minimize the gift. We may quickly search for a way to return it so that we do not feel exposed, indebted, or too deeply seen.
Learning to receive is an ongoing practice, a stretch for me. Through repeated let downs, disappointments, and my own unrealistic expectations, I have come to be suspect of receiving, truly receiving. I sometimes feel it is safer to ‘go without’ receiving support, kindness, or love than to take the risk to show my deep needs, which can feel risky, vulnerable, exposed.
Through a three year training program in Gestalt psychology, I have relearned the ‘art of receiving’. Mariah Fenton Gadis, the former founder and clinical director of the Pennsylvania Gestalt Center, says, “Receiving is an action, an activity requiring concentration and purposeful movement. How much do you take in? Rate yourself from zero to 100%. If your number is low, you have discovered a powerful tool to change the quality of your life.”
This month’s love letter invites reflection on the sacred practice of learning to receive.
What if receiving love is not passivity, but courage? What if opening to care asks something just as profound of us as giving it? What if love becomes more whole when it is allowed to move in both directions?
To receive love is to be porous enough to let something true reach us. It is to notice the instinct to immediately explain it away. It is to let a kind word linger. It is to accept help without rushing to erase the asymmetry. It is to believe, even for a moment, that tenderness does not always come with strings attached.
This is not always easy.
For some of us, receiving touches old questions of worthiness, self-esteem. We wonder whether we have done enough to deserve what is being offered. We may feel safer being needed than being nourished. We may trust ourselves more in the role of giver than in the vulnerable, unguarded place of being loved.
And yet, love asks for openness. Intimacy asks that we allow ourselves to be met, not only admired for our strength or appreciated for what we do, but genuinely met in our humanness.
Perhaps this is part of what it means to grow. To let care arrive and remain. To be open to acts of kindness. To practice not turning away when something good is offered. To discover that receiving does not make us weak, dependent, or selfish. It makes us honest. It reminds us that we, too, are part of the circle of care.
Learning to receive does not diminish generosity. It deepens it. When we are able to receive love with humility and presence, we are less likely to give from exhaustion, performance, or unspoken longing. We begin to love with greater freedom because we are no longer trying to earn what we have not allowed ourselves to accept.
As you sit with this reflection, you might notice how you respond when love comes toward you. You might consider the ways you deflect, delay, or distance yourself from care. You might gently ask what it would mean to let love reach you without resistance.
